Fiber is most commonly known for its benefits in helping keep us regular. But the truth is that it plays many other roles in our body. It not only is important for heart and gut health but it can support blood glucose regulation and can be a wonderful weight-loss support tool.

What is Fiber?

Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that our bodies can't break down or absorb like other nutrients. But just because our bodies don’t absorb it, it does not mean that fiber is not an important component in our diet. There are two different types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber, like the name suggests, is water-soluble and turns into a gel. This gel slows digestion, which is helpful with blood glucose support, and it can help you feel full longer. Insoluble fiber is not water-soluble, and instead, it adds bulk into the waste eliminated from our bodies through our gastrointestinal tract. This can be a particularly great tool to prevent constipation.

Daily Recommendation and Sources

Both types of fiber are equally important for our health and in fact, you can find both in most plant-based foods. Unfortunately, many forget that including fiber-rich foods into their day-to-day diet is a very important aspect of healthy eating. In-fact, many Americans are consuming only half of the daily recommended intake, which is around 25 grams for women and 38 grams for men.

Some delicious ways to include more fiber into your meals include vegetables, beans and legumes, and nuts, grains and seeds.
