Ingredients:

  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 cup milk

Food coloring:

  • Orange, green, purple, or colors of choice

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour a 9x9-inch pan or line a muffin pan with paper liners.
  2. In a medium bowl, blend together the sugar and butter. Beat in the eggs, then stir in vanilla. Combine flour and baking powder, add to the creamed mixture, and mix well. Finally, stir in the milk until the batter is smooth.
  3. Pour the batter evenly into three different bowls.
  4. Add food coloring to each one, and mix. Keep adding a bit more until you get the desired color.
  5. Pour or spoon batter into the prepared pan. Add the batter in slowly in a circular pattern. Pour each of the colors one at a time.
  6. Repeat for the second cake layer, but reverse color order.
  7. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes in the preheated oven. Cake is ready when it springs back to the touch, or when a toothpick or knife comes out clean from the center.
  8. Let cake cool before transferring to a wire rack.
  9. Frost the first layer of the cake. Place the second layer on top and frost the second layer.
  10. Decorate cake as desired with your frosting of choice!
