  • Hydroxocobalamin is a unique form of vitamin B12‚ which is more readily converted into the coenzyme forms than conventional cyanocobalamin. Hydroxocobalamin also readily binds body stores of cyanide‚ unlike conventional cyanocobalamin‚ which already includes this ion in its structure.

Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is one of the most complex vitamins in existence. It is used by the body in two different ways‚ and consequently requires two different coenzymes to process it. These two coenzymes forms of Vitamin B12 are methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin (also known as cobalamide or dibencozide). The starting point is hydroxycobalamin.
Methylcobalamin nourishes the brain and central nervous system and thus prevents the numbness‚ dementia‚ and degeneration of the nerve cells (neurons) seen in B12 deficiency. Adenosylcobalamin helps the body process ceratin amino acids and forms substances used in the body's energy cycle.
Most B12 supplements are in cyanocobalamin form‚ which the body must convert into hydroxycobalamin in order to create the two applicable coenzymes in question. By taking a performed hydroxycobalamin supplement‚ one can skip over this first biochemical hurdle‚ allowing for unhampered formation of adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin.
Scientists have identified B12 deficiencies as risk factors for a multitude of conditions‚ including neuropathy‚ myelopathy‚ anemia‚ cardiovascular sisease and depression‚ among others. Clinical studies with B12 pertaining to the symptoms of many of these conditions are well established and widespread. Furthermore‚ one landmark study found that hydroxycobalamin decreased whole blood cyanide levels by 59% among heavy smokers. Finally‚ B12 deficiencies are particularly likely among vegetarians‚ with one German study reporting that only 5.3% of vegetarians meet the recommended intake of B12.

One of the "cleanest' of the H-B-12s

I have food and supplement sensitivities, and this one actually works for me. I was surprised, as it contains sorbitol (which I normally react to), but it's turned out to be fine. I chose this one after looking at quite a few other brands - all of which had issues. I'm using this for a methylation protocol, and some of the other Hydroxy B12 by Advanced Orthomolecular Research had synthetic folate - defeating the purpose. This one was one of the simplest, ingredients-wise.

    Pros

      fairly simple ingredients.

    Cons

sorbitol - but I have found it tolerable.

I would recommend this item to a friend.

    Great product, low price.

I recently found out I have the MTHFR gene mutations which can affect B12 absorption, so I need to be careful of what types of B12 I take. The Hydroxy form I have been told is safe for everyone, so I ordered Hydroxy B12 by Advanced Orthomolecular Research.

    Pros

It has a pleasant taste and dissolves pretty quickly.

    Cons

      Nothing.

I would recommend this item to a friend.

    Great product

From genetic testing I discovered that I have a particular set of SNPs which cause me to need to avoid supplements that are methyl donors. That means I need to avoid methylcobalamin and methyl-folate. Taking the hydroxy form of B12 is perfect for my situation though.

    Great Product!

All this time I didn't know I needed this type of B12. There are so many kinds. I really felt the effects of Hydroxy B12 by Advanced Orthomolecular Research the day I took it. I felt focused calm and less stressed. A special thanks to my Doctor and Classic Series!

    Much Needed

Hydroxy B12 by Advanced Orthomolecular Research was recommended by a biochemist I'm working with on my gene mutations and EPV. Just started taking it so can't tell you that I notice anything different yet.

    Unique, important form of B12.

It's not too easy to find hydroxy B12, but it's a great way to take this important nutrient since it's so easily assimilated by the body. It's quite easy to become deficient in B12 (smokers, coffee drinkers, anxious folks, some vegetarians, folks with poor absorption) as it's depleted rapidly and not stored in the body. We need thousands of times the amount of B12 recommended by our silly, ill-informed government RDAs! Hydroxy B12 by Advanced Orthomolecular Research tablets taste good and dissolve easily under the tongue (sublingual is good because the mouth's mucus membranes can easily absorb the nutrients).

    Reformulation blues.

I used Hydroxy B12 Advanced Orthomolecular Research before its reformulation, after its first reformulation and now after the second reformulation. The first reformulation was an attempt to remove all ingredients of concern but it was a disaster both in terms of taste and integrity of the tablets. The new reformulation has new ingredients of concern. I'm bummed.

    Pros

It's difficult to find sources of Hydroxy B12 without a lot of ingredients of concern.

    Cons

      Ingredients of concern.

If I was taking 5000 mcg of the methylc. before being introduced to this form (due to genetic testing), should I be taking 5000 mcg of the hydroxy?

    • PureFormulas on 7/12/2016

Hi Joanne, we apologize but here at PureFormulas, we cannot make recommendations for our customers because there is so much to take into consideration when doing so. Everyone breaks down, absorbs, and reacts to nutrients differently, and only your healthcare practitioner, that is familiar with your needs, would be able to make a recommendation that is the best for you.
