Liver support for Small Animals.

Hepagen offers comprehensive liver support. It enhances glutathione levels‚ supports liver cells‚ and aids detoxification.

Environmental toxins in the food and water of dogs and cats can put a heavy demand on the liver of these animals because it's the liver's job to eliminate these toxins. Hepagen is a unique formula that combines two beneficial botanical ingredients – milk thistle and curcumin (from turmeric) – with antioxidants and nutrients that support the liver's normal detoxification processes. Hepagen provides the active forms of vitamin B6 (pyridoxal 5'-phosphate) and vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin)‚ along with dimethylglycine‚ methionine‚ and N-acetylcysteine‚ all of which are essential nutrients for supporting multiple liver detoxification processes.

Healthy liver function is necessary for both humans and animals to activate pyridoxine (vitamin B6). In cases where liver health might be diminished‚ supplementing with the active form of vitamin B6 – pyridoxal 5'-phosphate – is definitely indicated. Hepagen provides 5 mg of active pyridoxal 5'-phosphate because it's a cofactor for so many enzyme reactions. Vitamin B12 – methylcobalamin – helps maintain optimal energy production in the cells of the body. Vitamin B12 is also necessary for the digestion of amino acids and the metabolism of carbohydrates and fats to take place. Because much of the vitamin B12 is stored in and then supplied by the liver‚ a properly functioning liver is essential to maintain adequate vitamin B12 levels. Dimethylglycine (DMG) is a derivative of the simplest of the amino acids‚ glycine. Methionine is an essential sulfur-containing amino acid that is necessary for phase II detoxification. It also helps metabolize fats and is a necessary precursor to the synthesis of cysteine and taurine. A healthy liver has an abundance of glutathione‚ a very powerful antioxidant that the body can synthesize on its own. N-acetylcysteine (NAC)‚ a protein composed of the amino acid cysteine and a sulfhydryl group‚ is a precursor to glutathione. Thus‚ the inclusion of NAC in Hepagen supports liver health by facilitating the animal's ability to make glutathione.

    • Medicine good, Form factor bad

      from Albuquerque on 10/23/2020
We have used Hepagen for our cat for several years. At first, we gave it to her through a feeding tube by opening the capsules, mixing the powder with water and using a syringe to shove it into the tube. It worked - she went from skin as orange as the powder from jaundice to slightly abnormal liver enzyme levels. Once the tube was removed, we gave her half a capsule a day. Occasionally, when her liver flared up, we upped that to a full capsule. The new format for the medicine, supposedly as a chewable tablet, is not successful. The tablets stink just as bad as the powder when we mixed it up with water, our cat does not like the taste (who can blame her?) and I have to shove a pill cut in half with sharp edges down her throat. This is a terrible set back, all because someone got the bright idea of saving a little money in preparation by molding the powder instead of automated capsule filling. Please give customers the option of capsules.

      Pros

It works - or at least it still seems to work. We'll know after the next blood work up.

      Cons

The form factor is all wrong.
    • This is great!

      from Utah on 12/12/2014
I ordered Hepagen-C by Thorne Research to help my dog with her liver inflammation that was indicated in a blood test the Vet did. It seemed to help get her back on her feet and she feels so much better. I found this product online after researching holistic remedies for liver and kidney ailments and the Vet had no suggestions for her.

My little shih tzu has an underlying liver disorder. I originally ordered Hepagen-C on her vets recommendation to help keep the problem under control. Hepagen-C has been working well. Her blood work is just fine.

      Pros

      It is working well.

      Cons

My dog gets 1/2 capsule per day. It can be difficult to measure an divide it properly.

      great results

      from Orange, CA on 12/26/2012
My vet had recommended Hepagen-C for several of my dogs all with different causes of elevated liver values. In each case we got tremendous results with either huge improvement and maintenance over time to completely reversing the liver damage all together. Would highly recommend this product.

      Pros

Food lover dogs will eat willingly. Terrific results.

      Cons

Smells bad and lingers on their breath and two of the four dogs that had to take it would not do so willingly.

      Hepagin-C

      from Denver, CO on 6/26/2012
My Boston Terrier had ALT values 3X normal and BUN about 50% higher than it should be. Hepagen-C was recommended by my holistic Veterinarian and after the dog was on it for 5 months it brought the ALT to only 2X normal and the BUN was normal! Since I trust Thorne products I was delighted with the results. We are continuing treatment and will check blood again in about a month. As for Pureformulas they are an excellent company to deal with prompt courteous and shipping time is minimal. I will continue to purchase from this website they make it so easy.

      Pros

Its safe its pure its easy to dose.

      Cons

I wish the capsules were a little smaller for such a small dog.

      Hepagen-C Liver Cleansing (Thorne)

      from Rockford, Michigan on 1/20/2011
Hepagen-C by Thorne Research was recommended by my homoeopathic Veterinarian. Our golden retriever has severe allergies and after some testing she felt that his liver wasn't functioning as well as it should. Whenever our dog has a bad episode we give him Hepagen-C and over time he is able to get back on track. He also takes other supplements and enzymes so I can't be 100 % sure which one helps the most but I think this product does help.

  • Question:
Is this product now known as simply "Hepagen" instead of "Hepagen-C"?
    Chin on 11/02/2017 Answer:
    • Hi Chin, thank you for your question. The product we currently carry is simply Hepagen. We do apologize for any confusion. The alpha lipoic acid has been removed from the new formula and cats may now also take this product as well.

I have a Yorkie 3 lbs and it's hard to measure out the capsules? Are they thinking of making it for smaller breed dogs?
Jo Ann Stange on 6/02/2015 Answer:
    • Thank you for your question, Jo Ann. We are not sure what Thornes plans are as far as manufacturing this product for smaller breeds. We suggest contacting the manufacturer as they should have someone on hand with these details available for you :)
