  • Every food you eat performs different functions in your body. Some foods supply energy‚ others mostly build muscle‚ and still others repair tissues. To enhance your immune system and support your tissues‚ you should have a diet rich in vitamins like folate (also known as vitamin B9 and folic acid) and vitamin B12‚ which work together. These vitamins are also essential to forming nerves and red blood cells‚ as well as metabolizing protein for energy production within the body. You can get both vitamins from foods like fish‚ oysters‚ chicken‚ clams‚ leafy vegetables‚ fruits‚ beans‚ and mushrooms. However‚ folate is water-soluble and is easily excreted in your urine. Because of this‚ it's vital that you have an adequate amount each day.

Deficiencies in either nutrient can result in anemia‚ fatigue‚ memory loss‚ and compromised immunity. Taking a supplement that contains folic acid and vitamin B12‚ like Folate 5-Plus with B12 by Biotics Research‚ can work to support overall health. Each tablet also provides antioxidant enzymes like catalase.

Folate 5-Plus with B12 includes the following ingredients:

    • Folic acid: Enhances conversion of homocysteine—a toxic amino acid that may harden arteries—into the harmless cysteine. Also supports the replication process of DNA and RNA.
    • Vitamin B12: Can help increase alertness; enhance development of the nerves' white-sheath; and aid in genetic material synthesis.
    • Superoxide dismutase: An enzyme that supports lung and skin health while relieving some musculoskeletal inflammation and rebuilding tissues.
    • Catalase: An antioxidant enzyme that supplies cells with oxygen from hydrogen peroxide‚ works to prevent DNA damage‚ and may slow down the appearance of visible signs of aging.

This 120-tablet bottle of Biotics Research’s Folate 5-Plus with B12 will last you for about four months when taken at the recommended dosage of one tablet daily.

    OTC high dose folinic?!

Wow! I didn't know that Folate 5 Plus with B12 by Biotics Research high dose folinic acid was available OTC. We have used Rx in the past to treat Folate Receptor Antibodies. The antibodies block the transport of methylfolate into the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). The transport via the Folate Receptor 1 in the brain (choroid plexus) is energy (ATP) dependent, so having impaired mitochondrial function didn't help. This high dose folinic acid crosses into the CSF by another route (Reduced Folate Carrier) and can help normalize methylfolate levels IF they were too low. (Short term) treatment with high dose folinic acid was the icing on the cake for helping my son lift that last bit of "fog". Language, social interactions, sleep, mood, focus and concentration all improved. It's a complicated topic but suffice to say that the lower the methylfolate levels the more the folate receptor will try to proliferate to make up for it. We know this folate receptor is way "over expressed" in cancerous tumors- so much so it's a targeted conventional cancer treatment.. IMHO better to help alleviate low methylfolate by using the high dose folinic acid to gain access to CSF (or other tissues) where it can (hopefully) be converted into the methylfolate so important to health and methylation. Wish I'd known that years ago when taking prenatal vitamins containing synthetic folic acid which can block that methyfolate from crossing. The thyroid (along with kidney, lung, small intestine, and brain) is another tissue that has folate receptor (1). I ended up with thyroid cancer. Who knows...

    Pros

I'm glad it exists. I like that it also contains some methylcobalamin, though that may not be enough on an individual basis.

    Cons

Hesitated whether to give 3 stars since people really have to watch out for problems at this high dose. Since the folatefolate receptor antibody test is now commercially available (2016) it's better to monitor and work with an MD to know when to back off.

I would recommend this item to a friend.

I have been taking B12 as a supplement to my vegetarian diet for decades. this brand is the best. Had been taking a sublingual tablet but those were not big enough to provide adequate levels.

    Pros

Small tabs are easy to swallow.

    Cons
