Good early in the meal, doesn't like me at the end

A reflexologist recommended this to a friend, and told her to take one capsule with each meal, opening it and putting in warm water and sipping throughout the meal. She says it helps her have better digestion, so I thought I'd try it as well. It does seem to help minimize gas and gas-related nausea if I take it early in the meal - I've been trying the same sipping method. However, if I forget to sip enough and end up drinking half or so of the cup at or near the end of the meal, I have quite unpleasant sensations including heat and some nausea - probably what I've heard called "sour stomach", for several hours thereafter. I also think I have some of this if I take it with a light meal, so I'm choosing now whether to take it or not depending on whether a meal is heavy on complex carbohydrates and/or protein, or not.
Pros:Seems to help digest grains, beans, etc., when taken at the beginning of the meal.
Cons:Causes discomfort if taken near the end of the meal, or with a light meal.
