  • Stress is one of the biggest challenges we face daily‚ and it becomes a challenge to our health. As stress increases‚ the central nervous system is more apt to stay in overdrive‚ precluding relaxation and restful sleep. Sleep is essential to rebuild‚ to reenergize and to recover from each previous day. Sleep is recognized to play a vital regulatory role in a number of physiological and psychological systems. Abnormal sleep patterns are associated with adverse health outcomes‚ such as increased risk for mortality‚ morbidity and poorer quality of life. The lack of sleep is tied to the common ailment of depression‚ which has recently been described as a chronic inflammatory condition.
SLP Renew is a powerful and unique formula designed to deliver calming and sleep supporting ingredients in the quickest and most direct delivery system available sublingual. SLP Renew is a pleasant tasting lozenge that dissolves under the tongue directly into the bloodstream. Melatonin is included in this formula to support the onset of the sleep cycle‚ and phenibut is included to support the delivery of GABA‚ a relaxing inhibitory neurotransmitter‚ across the blood brain barrir where it is able to signal the body to remain in a relaxed state. Phenibut and melatonin are not as effective when they are swallowed because they get destroyed by stomach acid. SLP Renew is good support for sleep‚ relaxation‚ oxidative stress (free radical formation)‚ jet lag‚ normal aging‚ the immune system and inefficient exposure to sunlight. Zlotos et al. (2013) speculate that the applications for melatonin go far beyond circadian sleep cycles.
Melatonin is produced in the pineal gland‚ and has been recognized throughout the years as a potent antioxidant and regulator of the circadian rhythm involved in the sleep-wake cycle. Darkness causes the body to produce more melatonin‚ which signals the body to prepare for sleep. Light decreases melatonin production and signals the body to prepare for being awake. Some people who have trouble sleeping have low levels of melatonin.
Melatonin production decreases as a person ages. As children grow‚ the nightly schedule of melatonin release adequate levels of melatonin to barely registering. Melatonin has strong antioxidant properties. Studies indicate that melatonin can affect the genes that are involved in the adaptation to axidative stress and inflammation; melatonin was able to reduce the age-related alterations that typically occur in these genes.
Smits et al. (2003) conducted a randomized‚ double-blind‚ placebo-controlled trial was conducted in a Dutch sleep center‚ involving 62 children‚ 6 to 12 years of age‚ who suffered more than 1 year from idiopathic chronic sleep-onset insomnia. Patients received either 5 mg melatonin or placebo at 7 pm. Melatonin treatment significantly advanced sleep onset by 57 minutes‚ sleep offset by 9 minutes‚ and melatonin onset by 82 minutes‚ and decreased sleep latency by 17 minutes.
Phenibut (beta-phenyl-gamma-aminobutyric acid) is also a powerful antioxidant‚ and unlike GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid)‚ it is able to cross the blood barrier to promote its effects. It is the addition of a phenyl ring to GABA that allows phenibut to cross the blood brain barrier. The proposed mechanisms of phenibut are aimed at neuronal responses‚ learning centers‚ and normal dopamine production. Interestingly‚ Phenibut is mandated standard equipment in a Russian cosmonaut's medical kit. The use of conventional drugs for stress and anxiety was deemed unacceptable for cosmonauts and there were concerns about how the drugs adversely affected performance.

One tablet before bedtime‚ dissolved under the tongue. For best results‚ maximum use should not exceed 3-5 nights per week.

There is little or no evidence of any major toxicity with melatonin‚ even at high doses (Melatonin. Review of Natural Products. Facts & Comparisons [online database]. November 2009). While some recommend avoiding melatonin for children‚ the caution appears hypothetical; there is no evidence that is unsafe‚ and in fact many recommend it for children. For instance‚ Drugs.com notes that melatonin has been used in dosages of 2-5 mg in children 6 mos. to 14 yrs. of age for sleep disorders‚ while others suggest frequency of use in children to be kept to no more than twice a week; with a dosage <0.5 mg.
Do not drive or use machinery for four to five hours after taking melatonin. Taking melatonin along with sedative medications might cause too much sleepiness (WebMD). Caffeine can reduce melatonin concentrations‚ and may reduce the effectiveness of melatonin supplementation; it is best to consume any
caffeine far away from the time of supplementation. Birth control pills and Fluvoxamine (Luvox) increase melatonin production and the compounding effect should be considered. Do not take with blood thinners. Melatonin may reduce the effectiveness of the drug nifedipine (Procardia XL).
