Selenium is an obligatory nutrient which provides nutritional support for multiple biological functions. Clinical evidence supports selenium's role in cellular antioxidant function, thyroid hormone activity and various immune parameters.


STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
Thyroxin (T4), the major hormone product of the thyroid gland, is converted by 5 (outer ring) deiodination to the more biologically active hormone triiodothyronine (3,5,3triiodothyronine, T3). This conversion is induced by type I and type II iodothyronine deiodinases enzymes. Selenium plays an integral part in enzyme bio-activity for healthy thyroid functioning.


Glutathione Peroxidase, one of the major intracellular antioxidants in the human body, is a well-characterized selenoprotein. Selenium-containing peroxidases help protect the lipophilic membrane and soluble fractions of cells from free radical induced redox reactions.


Free radicals such as hydrogen peroxide can influence lymphocyte activity depending on cellular concentration. Selenium supports glutathione's role in helping neutralize hydrogen peroxide, which in turn may positively influences lymphocyte levels for immune support.


Some scientific evidence suggests that consumption of selenium may reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer. However, FDA has determined that this evidence is limited and not conclusive.


INDICATIONS
Selenium content within soil can widely vary depending on geographical location, affecting the levels within plant foods. This in turn can affect selenium levels within animals feeding off of these plants. Supplementation is an easy way to promote adequate selenium levels. It is often recommended that older individuals and vegetarians supplement with selenium as well (meat is one of the better natural sources of selenium).

CLINICAL EVIDENCE
22 older subjects were given 100 mcg/d of selenium yeast or placebo in a double-blinded trial. Subjects receiving selenium demonstrated a significant response for immune-promoting properties.


Over 100 euthyroid subjects were randomized to receive selenium or placebo in a double-blinded trial. Results found that selenium status positively influenced healthy thyroid hormone levels.


In a double-blinded study, selenium supplementation was found to promote both selenium and glutathione peroxidase levels.


Subjects receiving parenteral nutrition were given 200 mcg/d of selenium and had immune parameters analyzed. Results found selenium to have a positive impact on lymphocyte and mitogen response.
