PGX^® (PolyGlycopleX^®) is a highly viscous combination of water soluble polysaccharides derived from konjac root, sodium alginate, and xantham gum. Viscous fibers have been shown to reduce postprandial glucose concentrations and lower total and LDL-cholesterol, primarily by forming a gel matrix which slows gastric emptying. Clinical trials have shown that in addition to the benefits of glucose and lipid reduction, highly viscous fibers were found to lower insulin secretion and C-peptide in response to carbohydrate meals, and to lower serum fructosamine, a marker of glycemic control. PGX‘s viscosity is greater than other known sources of soluble fiber, allowing for easier dosing and greater efficacy for its diverse benefits. 
Mulberry has been combined in this formula for both its hypoglycemic effects, as well as its benefit for lipid profiles. A clinical trial with mulberry powder found it to significantly suppress elevation of postprandial blood glucose and secretion of insulin, likely by inhibiting carbohydrate absorption. It reduced fasting glucose levels more than glibenclamide treatment, and also decreased the concentration of serum total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL cholesterol, while increasing HDL cholesterol.
