For more than a century, people throughout Asia have been consuming soybeans in a variety of food products. Scientists have isolated and patented a beneficial enzyme, named nattokinase, from soybean natto.


STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
The vegetable cheese-like food, natto, is extremely popular in Japan and has a history extending back over 1,000 years. Nattokinase is a naturally occurring protease enzyme derived from soybean Natto. This enzyme is a subtilisin-like serine protease composed of 275 amino acid residues and has a molecular weight of 27.7 kDa. Nattokinase is present in the blood plasma and helps support the cardiovascular system. The potency of each nattokinase dose is standardized according to its Nattokinase activity as fibrinolytic units (FU). PhysioLogics NSK-SD™ Nattokinase contains 1,000 FU per softgel. This product helps support cardiovascular and circulatory health.


CLINICAL EVIDENCE
In this trial, 73 subjects received either nattokinase containing 2,000 FU per capsule or placebo for eight weeks. The treatment group demonstrated a significantly greater improvement in heart health compared with placebo group. (Kim et al, 2008)


A total of 28 subjects received a daily oral dose of 250 mg of NKCP, a refined version of nattokinase, for two weeks. In a follow-up trial, 23 of the subjects received the same dose for twelve weeks. Significant fibrinolytic effect was demonstrated by an enhancement of euglobulin lysis time in both trials. Significant improvement in shoulder joint comfort was also observed. (Omura et al, 2004)
