PRODUCT DISCUSSION
Theanine is a natural phytochemical found in Japanese green tea. PhysioLogics L-Theanine provides the L-isomer of this unique amino acid that is related to the amino acid glutamate.


STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
L-Theanine is a nonessential amino acid that can support the mood centers in the brain. It is a non-protein amino acid, found only in tea and the rare mushroom xerocomus badius, that has been shown by electroencephalography (EEG) to affect alpha-band activity in the brain.


CLINICAL EVIDENCE
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial, 12 subjects were given a mental arithmetic task designed to induce an acute stress response. The feelings of the subjects were measured after taking 200 mg of L-Theanine at the start of the task, 200 mg of L-Theanine midway through the task, placebo, or nothing. Both L-Theanine treatments resulted in an equally significant calming effect compared to the two control groups. This study supports the use of 200 mg of L-Theanine, the recommended daily dose for PhysioLogics L-Theanine, for relaxation. (Kimura et al, 2007)


A total of 35 subjects received either 50 mg of L-Theanine or placebo before having brain activity assessed by EEG at rest and at 45, 60, 75, 90 and 105 minutes. Researchers observed a significantly greater increase in alpha brain wave activity over time in the treatment group compared with the control group. Alpha-band activity is associated with a relaxed yet alert mental state. (Nobre et al, 2008)
