You might wonder why foods and condiments like table salt are fortified with iodine. It’s because for many decades‚ people weren’t able to get enough iodine in their diets. Now‚ you may be asking why you need iodine in the first place. Your thyroid gland stores 60 percent of your iodine intake; it’s important for the healthy function of the thyroid‚ which controls the metabolic rate of our bodies. This means that your thyroid gland controls how your body uses its calories and when it stores them as fat.
A lack of iodine in your diet can lead to a number of problems‚ including sadness‚ trouble with vision perception‚ unexplained weight gain‚ changes in your skin‚ and decreased fertility.
Like all nutrients‚ it’s best to get iodine from whole food sources. Marine fish and shellfish like tuna‚ salmon‚ shellfish‚ and shrimp are some of the best natural sources of iodine available. Garlic‚ spinach‚ chard‚ and summer squash are among the vegetables available with the most iodine content. However‚ it can be inconvenient for you to eat enough of these foods. This is why iodine has been added to salt and even bread dough. Unfortunately‚ excessive sodium intake comes with its own problems‚ so you may want to take a supplement instead.
Pure Encapsulations’ Iodine Capsules contain 225 mcg of iodine in the form of potassium iodide‚ making it an excellent source for adults. The recommended daily amount of iodine for adults is 150 mcg; for pregnant women‚ the recommendation rises to 220 mcg. That makes this supplement a good choice if you’re trying to conceive.
