Numerous studies have been performed on Horse Chestnut Seed Extract (HCSE). As found in different animal experiments, the principal ingredient in HCSE is the triterpene glycoside mixture known as escin, which has an anti-exudative and vascular-tightening effect.

Using placebo as reference, a significant reduction of transcapillary filtration has been demonstrated in pharmacological studies involving human subjects. Several clinical trials support the benefits of HCSE in promoting healthy venous function.
