Another great tool for certain people!

Goldenseal Root is a wonderful bitter tonic that is probably the most cooling herb in the West. I was hesitant to take this in Autumn since it is already getting cold here in the NC mountains, but it turns out that it was very helpful. Certain types of people (Ayurveda: pitta) have a predisposition to accumulating a lot of heat in the body and energy from the Summer months, and often need practical ways to reduce it. If not dealt with properly, it can manifest around this time of year (Autumn) as skin rashes or a 'hot' temper. I use Goldenseal Root to help with this, but it shouldn't be taken on a continuous basis, perhaps 2 weeks on, 1 week off or 3 on 2 off etc. It is an incredibly potent antibiotic for which it makes a good herbal substitute/replacement. Because of this, however, it can adversely affect normal flora levels in the colon, which is why it is important to cycle on and off while taking probiotics the whole time. I can only take 1/3 of the recommended dose (1 capsule daily) without getting constipated. I never EVER have this problem normally but when the healthy flora are compromised, it can be an issue. I have a somewhat compromised immune system and although this herb is a great immune tonic, the lack of stability of my gut flora may be more of the explanation for this than the herb itself. What I am saying is that everyone is in a different state and don't be scared of Goldenseal Root just because of my experience. I find it very helpful overall, you just need to start small and slowly work up, seeing how it affects all aspects of you. As with some very potent herbs like this one, there are some people who probably shouldn't take it at all.
Additionally, this herb is very good at regulating and sedating liver and spleen function. Sometimes when people have a weakened spleen due to diet, lifestyle or other reasons, it isn't enough to just take foods and herbs that increase spleen functioning. In some cases, the liver can actually overpower a healthy spleen, so in that case it is really the liver that needs sedation, not necessarily the spleen function that needs augmentation. But in our culture with overeating and the common consumption of cold and processed foods, almost everyone's spleen could use a little boost from our plant friends. More important, however, is removing the cause of what makes it so easy to get imbalanced in the first place. :D
Pros:overall great product, goldenseal is goldenseal and this company provides a pure product. Also it's good that it's not an extract, since goldenseal is so strong in its pure form anyway. VEGETARIAN capsule :D
Cons:There's nothing to dislike, as long as you know the properties of the herb and start small and slow while listening to your body, everything will be cool.
