PRODUCT DISCUSSION
Physiologics Glucosamine/Chondroitin HP combines Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate, two ingredients that have been studied together in clinical trials more than any other combination of joint ingredients. Glucosamine, an aminomonosaccharide, provides the building blocks for constructing cartilage. Chondroitin promotes healthy enzymatic metabolism of cartilage. Together, these ingredients support overall joint function, mobility, flexibility, total joint space and comfort.


STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
Glucosamine, a key component of cartilage and synovial fluid, is utilized as the main substrate in the synthesis of glycosaminoglycans (GAG)s and proteoglycans, the primary structural components in cartilage. Glucosamine undergoes metabolic conversion to glucosamine-6phosphate and subsequently to galactosamine, which is required for GAG assembly. This process promotes cartilage production and articular function.


Chondroitin Sulfate is a highly charged polyanion that promotes fluid retention in the connective tissue to support joint flexibility and cushion joints. Composed of N-acetyl-galactosamine and glucuronic acid, Chondroitin Sulfate provides a raw material for proteoglycan and GAG synthesis to help renew cartilage. Chondroitin Sulfate also promotes healthy enzymatic metabolism of cartilage, to further maintain joint health.


CLINICAL EVIDENCE
In this double-blind placebo/celecoxib-controlled trial, 1583 subjects received one of the following daily for 24 weeks: 1500 mg of glucosamine HCL, 1200 mg of chondroitin sulfate, both glucosamine HCL and chondroitin sulfate, 200 mg of celecoxib, or placebo. In the subgroup of subjects with the most joint concerns, those receiving the combination of glucosamine and chondroitin experienced a significant improvement in knee function compared to placebo. (Clegg et al, 2006)


In this study, 30 subjects receiving 1500 mg of glucosamine per day were compared with 28 subjects receiving a placebo for 12 weeks. All participants had joint concerns at the beginning of the study. The subjects who received the glucosamine experienced a significant improvement in several aspects of joint comfort compared with placebo. (Usha et al, 2004)
