BACKGROUND
Omega-3 fatty acids are considered to be "good" fats in the diet that may have numerous health benefits. The Omega-3 fatty acids Eicosapentanoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) often are in short supply in the American diet because fatty fish are among the few food sources. Another Omega-3 fatty acid, Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA), is more abundant than EPA and DHA in the American diet. The body may be able to convert some ALA into EPA and DHA but the process is thought to be inefficient.

STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
The family of Omega-3 fatty acids form part of the structure of membranes of every cell in the body and are essential for normal cell growth. EPA and DHA are direct precursors of a wide range of biologically important lipid mediators used in the support of virtually all biological functions, including those of the cardiovascular, reproductive, immune, and nervous systems. In a cross-sectional study conducted in 1,575 subjects, researchers found that higher consumption of linolenic acid was linked to lower prevalence of carotid plaques and decreased thickness of intimamedia carotid arteries.
