This Basic Prenatal Supplement by Thorne Research was designed to be a complete vitamin and mineral supplement for pregnant and lactating women. In this multi vitamin and mineral supplement, you’ll find the purest and highest quality ingredients available on the market in their most well-absorbed and highly bioavailable forms (so as to reduce the risk of stomach upset).

One of the most crucial vitamins for a healthy pregnancy is folate. Insufficient intake of folic acid during pregnancy has been shown to cause neural tube defects in infants. This Basic Prenatal supplement by Thorne Research provides the active forms of folic acid (L-5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate and folinic acid) in a balanced 1:1 ratio to help ensure that your body absorbs as much of this crucial vitamin as possible.  As iron is also important in pregnancy, but it sometimes can cause constipation, these Basic Prenatal capsules contain iron in the form of picolinate, which is easier on the stomach.

Pregnancy and Nutrition

During pregnancy, women need more calories and more nutrition to support themselves and a growing baby. Even after pregnancy, if the woman breastfeeds, her nutritional and caloric needs remain elevated. However, some women have trouble getting the appropriate amount of calories and nutrition from food, especially during their first trimester of pregnancy when many women suffer from morning sickness. Actually, some nutrients, such as those found in this Basic Prenatal capsules, can help benefit women who suffer from morning sickness. Such vitamins are vitamin B6, C and K.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommend that all women of childbearing age supplement with folic acid. This is because many pregnancies are not discovered until well into the first trimester, and this time is crucial for neural development of the fetus. Studies have shown that women who eat healthy diets, rich in folate, may reduce their risk of having a child born with a defect of the spinal cord or brain. Even though folate is extremely essential, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. Experts recommend that your folate intake not exceed 250 percent of the government’s recommended daily value – which equates to about 1,000 micrograms.

The Thorne Research Difference

As you may expect from Thorne Research, you will not find any of the additives or coatings that you might find in mainstream prenatal vitamin and mineral supplements. Basic Prenatal is formulated with only the purest and most bioavailable nutrients.

Many women have trouble digesting the high-potency prenatal vitamin and mineral supplements that are often needed during pregnancy – again, it is more of an issue during the first trimester when a woman is more susceptible to morning sickness. It is for this reason that Thorne Research does not include high volumes of the vitamins and minerals that are more likely to be harsh on the stomach. But, that doesn’t mean you’ll miss out on them. Thorne only includes the most bioavailable forms of vitamins B6, B2, folinic acid, L-5MTHF, adenosylcobalamin and B12 – so you’ll get more out of a smaller dose than you would with many mainstream vitamin and mineral supplements.

Iodine may occasionally cause an allergic reaction in some individuals.

EXCIPIENT FREE This product does not contain wheat, gluten, corn, yeast, soy, egg, dairy products, or artificial colors, sweeteners, or flavors. This product also does not contain lactose, palmitic acid, or magnesium, calcium, or vegetable stearates.

INTERACTIONS/CONTRAINDICATIONS As vitamin K interferes with the effect of anticoagulant drugs (like Coumadin), the concurrent use of these agents should be avoided.

Folinic acid and 5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate supplementation is not recommended concurrently with methotrexate cancer therapy, as they can interfere with methotrexate's anti-neoplastic activity; however, these folate sources have not been shown to interfere with the anti-inflammatory activity of methotrexate. An individual taking methotrexate for psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis can safely take a supplement containing folate.

OTHER WARNINGS Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under six. Keep this product out of reach of children. In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately.

Severe Nausea!
By Olivia from Indianapolis, IN on May 2, 2012
Basic Prenatal by Thorne caused a tremendous amount of nausea for me every time I took it, regardless of whether it was on a full or empty stomach. I had my mother try it as well and it caused significant nausea for her. I am not sure if it is due to the high iron content, or what exactly it is about this vitamin that caused the problem, but I ended up switching to Flintstones vitamins for kids and have had no problems since. I will not be purchasing this vitamin again, and do not recommend it for this reason.
Cons:
causes severe nausea

Seems to be doing a good job
By Amber from Seattle, WA on September 28, 2011
This brand was recommended to me by a friend who is a nutritionist, I have been taking Basic Prenatal 3 times a day for about 3 weeks now and I feel good. I am a little bit sensitive when it comes to taking pills so I make sure that I take them with a full meal.
Cons:
Nausea

I would recommend this item to a friend.

Non-Stomach Upsetting
By Tara from Portland, OR on June 8, 2011
I have had problems in the past with multi-vitamins upsetting my stomach. When I wanted to start taking a prenatal, my naturopath recommended these, and they have never upset my stomach. Also, it has enough folate that I do not have to use the prescription my doctor gave me. I am extremely happy with these.
Pros:
Non-stomach upsetting
High level of folate

I would recommend this item to a friend.

Love love love them

After trying many different prenatal vitamins with no success. My holistic doctor suggested basic prenatal and it works great.

It's complete

Quality prenatal
By Susan from McHenry, MS on January 21, 2011
I've been using these a few months and they seem to work fine. Only drawback is having to take 3 vitamins as one serving. Like that it doesn't have magnesium stearate which I've been told is not healthy for your stomach as it builds up in the lining and can cause health problems.

I would recommend this item to a friend.

Pure and natural prenatal vitamins
By Johanna from Phoenix, AZ on January 5, 2011
I went to a class at a natural health facility. The doctor there told me she took these vitamins for her pregnancy. She said that since they are capsules, they absorb in the body better than the tablets that are sold in stores. I decided I would give them a try and I have used them for my first pregnancy and now using them for my second. They are great vitamins and worth the price.
Pros:
they are capsules.
Cons:
I don't like that you have to take 3/day.

I would recommend this item to a friend.

Very easy to take
By Samantha from Charleston, WV on January 5, 2011
Been using these since before I got pregnant. Even during my pregnancy if I take them with food I don't have any issues. I feel good and will continue to take them even after the baby has been born.
Pros:
Easy to Swallow
Easy on the Stomach
Are affordable

I would recommend this item to a friend.

Excellent Vitamins
By Marisol from New Haven on November 1, 2010
When I was trying to get pregnant my nutritionist recommended these vitamins. After having the baby, I still use these vitamins. There are no coatings on the pills so they are easy on the stomach.
