What is Vicia Faba?

Vicia faba, also referred to as broadbean, was one of the first plants found to contain levodopa (or L-dopa), which is a precursor to dopamine. Levodopa is found in the leaves, shoots and flowers of the Vicia faba plant, and it is a common treatment for diseases that involve dopamine deficiency. Vicia faba is preferred over dopamine supplementation because it crosses the blood-brain barrier where dopamine cannot. As soon as it crosses that barrier and reaches the brain, the body converts L-dopa to dopamine.

What is Dopamine?

Dopamine is an excitatory or inhibitory neurotransmitter. Which it becomes will depend on the dopamine receptor it binds itself to. Dopamine is derived from the amino acid tyrosine. It is the precursor to epinephrine and norepinephrine, which are both catecholamines.
