PRODUCT DISCUSSION
PhysioLogics 5-HTP 100 mg provides L-5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) along with the B Vitamins Niacin and Vitamin B6 and the herb Valerian to promote nervous system health. 5-HTP is not present in significant amounts in the typical diet and is derived from the seeds of Griffonia simplicifolia, a plant of West African origin.


STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION
The compound 5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in sending messages through the brain and nervous system. It supports a calm, relaxed mood and promotes feelings of well-being. Niacin (B-3), also known as nicotinic acid and nicotinamide, helps maintain a healthy nervous system. The major coenzyme forms of Vitamin B-6 are Pyridoxine (B-6), pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP), and pyridoxamine (PMP). Vitamin B-6 supports brain and nervous system health. Valerian and its principle components have been extensively studied for well over 50 years. Lab data indicates that valerenic acid and acetylvalerenic acid in valerian can inhibit GABA transaminase, thereby prolonging the effects of GABA on sedation in the central nervous system. L-hydroxypinoresinol, another natural valerian alkaloid, has been found to possess a high affinity for the 5-HT1A receptor, which could also play a role in Valerian's beneficial effects.

CLINICAL EVIDENCE
In this study, 24 subjects received a one-time dose of 200 mg 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) or placebo in a double-blinded trial. The subjects receiving 5-HTP experienced a significantly calmer mood than the placebo group, supporting the use of 5-HTP for feelings of well-being. (Schruers et al, 2002) A total of 34 subjects were given either 200 mg of 5-HTP or placebo in a double-blinded clinical trial. The results showed a significant positive effect on feelings of calmness and well-being in the female subjects compared with placebo. (Maron et al, 2004)

My son had aggressive behavior and bites his hands so hard that bleeding. Gave him 5HTP two times per day and Zinc. Now his self injury reduce to %20

This product gave me extreme pain. My neck, stomach, right side. My heartburn was almost enough to send me to the Dr. I am afraid to take it again. I have had only 3 days and that is enough. One of the side effects that may occur is heart valve damage. My sister just had a valve replacement, so I won't take this again.
